Robert Kohn

Adjunct Faculty of German

Dr. Kohn first started teaching German at the College of Charleston in 2014. Previously, he taught at Texas Tech University, Southern Methodist University, and at the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Kohn earned a B.A. in German from DePauw University in Greencastle, IN, and received his M.A. and Ph.D. in Germanic Studies from the University of Texas at Austin.

Dr. Kohn's research interests include cultural memory, representations of trauma in literature and film (especially pertaining to the Holocaust/Shoah), effects of modernity on culture in the Weimar Republic, ecology and Vergangenheitsbewältigung (coming to terms with the past). He has taught courses on the German language, Weimar Republic, ecology, trauma and the Holocaust, at both undergraduate and graduate levels, and has taught business professionals at area branches of German companies, created online content, and helped design and develop a Learning Management System (LMS) for a local language services provider.

Dr. Kohn enjoys helping students to learn about other languages and cultures and experience the world through a different cultural lens. In addition to teaching German and about Germanic cultures, Dr. Kohn's passion for backpacking and hiking has led to his conducting German-speaking hiking tours of national parks in the American Southwest. Beyond hiking, Dr. Kohn enjoys spending time woodworking, playing guitar, and cycling.
