Pathways to the German Studies Major

Pathways to the German Studies Major

The pathway to the German Studies Major as a second major is very manageable, even if you are beginning in German 101 with us!

How so? For two main reasons:

  • You can “double count” 12 Credits towards the German Studies Major and Gen Ed Humanities, which opens up more space in your schedule for your other major.

  • You can gain 9 credits towards the major through the popular summer internship program to Germany while interning in their other field of study! (Or you can gain credit for GRMN 202 and 12 credits of GRMN 300+ coursework from a semester abroad their sophomore or Junior year!)

These two factors make it possible to begin in German 101 and complete the German Studies major with only one German language class per semester for all four years, which leaves ample time for your other major field of study, even if it is a high-credit major like some fields in the Sciences and Business!

The German Studies Major consists of 27 credits of GRMN 300+ courses, 6 credits of which can be in German Studies course work in English (GRST classes or Jewish Studies courses on the Holocaust, JWST 230 or 330).

The two main pathways to the German Studies Major are as follows (courses that count towards the major are in bold):

Option 1: Internship program to Germany

1st Year Fall: GRMN 101 + 1 GRST course or JWST 230 or 330, double counting towards GenEd Humanities credit

1st Year Spring: GRMN 102

2nd Year Fall: GRMN 201 + 1 GRST course or JWST 230 or 330, double counting towards GenEd Humanities credit

2nd Year Spring: GRMN 202

2nd Year Summer: Summer Internship to Germany

  • May: Intensive language course in Berlin and stay with Host family (2 GRMN 300+ courses)
  • June-July: nternship in your first major field/area of interest for June and July (1 GRMN 300+ course)

3rd year Fall: GRMN 313

3rd year Spring: GRMN 314

4th year Fall: 1 GRMN 300+, double counting with GenEd Humanities

4th year Spring: 1 GRMN 400+, double counting with GenEd Humanities, completing the major

Option 2: Semester Abroad in Germany

1st Year Fall: GRMN 101 + 1 GRST course or JWST 230 or 330, double counting towards GenEd Humanities credit

1st Year Spring: GRMN 102

2nd Year Fall: GRMN 201 + 1 GRST course or JWST 230 or 330, double counting towards GenEd Humanities credit

2nd Year Spring: Semester Abroad

3rd year Fall: GRMN 300+, double counting with GenEd Humanities

3rd year Spring: GRMN 314

4th year Fall: 1 GRMN 400+, double counting with GenEd Humanities and completing the major

4th year Spring: complete other major remaining credits, etc.

*Note 1: Students interested in maximizing their proficiency in German should take as many GRMN courses as possible, as they are entirely German and built to improve your proficiency  (the allowed six credits of  GRST and JWST 230/330 courses in English are electives and can be replaced by GRMN 300+ courses)

*Note 2: Another option to accelerate your proficiency is to take German 201 and 202 over the summer after your freshman year or study at a language institute in Germany after your first year. Each month of intensive German language study (4 hours a day) at a language institute in Germany = 6 credits of GRMN coursework

*Note 3: The above pathways are only a suggestion and the times can be rearranged based on your schedule/needs and depending how the pathways of your other major(s)/minor(s) work.
