Student Success Stories

Stephanie Selker ’19, German and Political Science

Stephanie Selker"As a sophomore (and German major) who is unsure what type of career I’d like to have after undergrad,I was extremely excited that the German Department was hosting the German American Business summit so that I could hear about different German companies in the area. It was an awesome opportunity to be able to hand out my resume to many different companies and hear what they were looking for, as well as getting experience talking to professionals. Ultimately, the business summit is what opened the door for me to gain a summer internship with Mercedes-Benz Vans in the Communication Department. Not only am I getting valuable professional experience, I’m also able to practice my German. I’m so grateful for the opportunity that the Summit provided me with, and I highly recommend attending for anyone!”

Will McEwen ’20: Economics and German

Will McEwen"The German American Business Summit at the College of Charleston provided me with an excellent opportunity to connect with lots of excellent companies from the nearby area. It was a great event at which to get engaged with said companies and find out what their mission was and what qualities they were looking for in potential employees and interns. One of the most encouraging things to hear was that most companies actually sought out the opportunity to invest in students while they were still in college, and this aligned perfectly with my desire to get hands-on experience in a business before graduating. I was able to get connected with Taylor Gibbons, the Human Resources Generalist at IFA Rotorion and after hearing about an opening for an internship in the finance department, I applied and I am interning this summer in Finance! Also, beyond being a great networking event it was very neat to hear directly from the panel of executives from German industry about what specifically they need in the workforce."

Stephanie Schlipp '17 International Business and German

Stephanie Schlipp“When I got back from my exchange semester at the University of Bamberg and began my senior year, I knew what I wanted to do (work for a global German corporation) but was still working on the how part.  The 1st German-American Business Summit gave me a perfect opportunity to explore internship and job opportunities with 10 different companies, and resulted in an internship in Human Resources at Mercedes-Benz Vans that began before my graduation and is continuing through the summer. The experience has been amazing thus far!. The opportunities provided by the summit, combined with the proficiency in German and knowledge of German culture that I gained in Bamberg, have been a huge boost for me as I begin my career.”
