Placement

Students who plan to take German will be placed in a language class based upon prior high school language instruction. All students are also strongly encouraged to meet with the Chair of German and Russian Studies, Dr. Morgan Koerner, koernerm@cofc.edu, to discuss higher or lower placement depending on other factors, including the amount of time that has transpired since their last German course.

If you are a native or heritage speaker of German and wish to be exempted from the language requirement at College of Charleston, or to continue the study of your heritage language, please contact Dr. Morgan Koerner (koernerm@cofc.edu) to schedule a short written/oral test for proper placement.

Please see the below Guide to German placement to see which class you should take, depending on years of high school German.

QUICK GUIDE TO GERMAN PLACEMENT

0-1 year of high school German = placement in GRMN 101

2 years of high school German = placement in GRMN 102

3 years of high school German = placement in GRMN 201

4 years of high school German = placement in GRMN 202

5 years of high school German = placement in GRMN 313*

* A placement into GRMN 313 does not in itself fulfill the foreign language requirement. If, however, a student places into GRMN 313 and passes the course, the General Education language requirement is fulfilled.

Students are strongly encouraged to reach out to the chair of German and Russian Studies to discuss placement in more detail, as a number of factors can result in higher or lower placement. Write Dr. Morgan Koerner koernerm@cofc.edu to set up an appointment.
